DescriptionThis fawn-colored rectangular panel has a large floral pattern over a fawn-colored, satin ground. The design consists of a symmetrical pattern of large scrolling flowers. A central bouquet of a rose, tulips, and berries is flanked above and below by baskets from which sprout large roses, flowers, and feathery acanthus leaves. The left and right edges are selvedges. The selvedge is green satin, about 25 warps wide (1/8”). The top and bottom edges are raw. Many of the satin warps have disintegrated. The fragment has been glued to a modern cotton backing, likely with spray glue.
Label TextThe fraying in the center of this fragment shows that the wefts (the horizontal threads) that make the color patterning travel all the way across the width of the fabric. This means that the fabric is not brocade, but what is sometimes called lampas.
Markings“4029” stamped in purple on reverse. Large oval and small rectangle "MORANT & CO." stamps in each corner on reverse.
ProvenanceThis is one of a large collection of "decorator samples" from the firm of MORANT & COMPANY, obtained by Morant & Co., 91 New Bond Street, London, before 1930. The firm, later known as LENYGON & MORANT, was transferred to New York about 1930.
Given to CWF, 1971.
