DescriptionArmchair, one of twenty-four. Turned and carved frame with cane seat and back. Sloping back with tall carved foliate cresting over a central cane panel with peaked top and bottom enclosed by fluted stiles and a molded, shaped stay rail, and flanked by stiles of turned columns with baluster shaped turnings at base. Trapezoidal caned seat with molded rails. Shaped arms termining in large scrolls over columnar shaped arm supports located directly above front legs. Front legs, columnar at top over scrolled knees and scrolled feet, all oriented at an angle; scrolled arched foliate front stretcher; turned side, medial, and rear stretchers. Rear legs extensions of turned stiles, raked towards rear, blocked at joints with stretchers, square rear foot. The chairs are based on an English example, made ca. 1695-1720, in the Wadsworth Atheneaum Collection (1926.443).
