DescriptionTablet back side chair with crest rail peaked in center top, rounded at ends, and shaped on underside forming two gothic arches in negative space flanking splat; solid wide vase shaped splat; saber legs; slipseat screwed into chair frame from underside.
Label TextThis chair is part of a set of 12 that descended in the Talbot family of Norfolk. Two other chairs in the set remain with the donor. Stenciled twice on the bottom of the chair is "T. Talbot" referring to Thomas Talbot (d.1932), the owner of Talbot Hall, Crab Creek, Norfolk. The design of this chair was quite popular in the nineteenth century, appearing in Baltimore and other large cities. Virginia cabinetmakers often advertised that they had the best workmen from northern cities like Philadelphia, New York, and Baltimore working in their shops and these artisans often brought the styles and designs with them from those northern locales.
ProvenanceThis chair is part of a set of 12 that descended in the Talbot family of Norfolk. Two other chairs in the set remain with the donor. Stenciled twice on the bottom of the chair is "T. Talbot" referring to Thomas Talbot (d.1932), the owner of Talbot Hall, Crab Creek, Norfolk. The chair descended from Thomas Talbot (1866-1932) to his brother, Minton Wright Talbot (1868-1950), and to his daughter, the donor. Thomas Talbot likely inherited the chairs from his parents, William Henry (1825-1884) and Elizabeth Minton Talbot (1844-1876).
