DescriptionSection of raised paneling from below chair rail. There is one full panel at top (although split horizontally) and half a panel at bottom. The panels, center rail, most of the top rail, and a little over half of the side stiles are charred on the obverse side, thus indicating the presence of the chair rail, base, and adjoining paneling. There are 2 tenons below the stiles, with holes for large nails, and there are 2 large in each stile, with the nail at center left being clasped over on the reverse. Where the stiles meet the top rails, there are 2 pegs and one nail at each joint, with those nails also being clasped over. The wood is sawn and planed.Label TextThis circa 1753 charred panel section from the Bassett Hall main stair was damaged in a fire in the house in 1928. It was used as a model for the restored main stair that you see at Bassett Hall today.
