DescriptionSide chair with trapezoidal seat and removable slip seat (replaced); front seat rails molded at the top and undercut at the bottom with a central rounded drop in each; cabriole front legs end in turned pad feet; columnar-turned and carved side stretchers join squared rear legs which are themselves joined by a turned rear stretcher; a carved serpentine medial stretcher joins the two side stretchers; the flat-faced rear stiles curve inward at the top where they join the crest rail, terminating in carved volutes separated by a wide "yoke" center; the shaped splat tenons into a one piece shoe and rear seat rail.Label TextLike American chairs, Bermuda chairs were strongly influenced by British designs. The slight details such as the turned side stretcher combined with the flat, shaped medial stretchers are particular to Bermuda chairs of this period.
ProvenanceThe chair was acquired from collectors and has no earlier history of ownership.
