DescriptionSplat-back side chair with concave yoke center top of crest flanked by rounded shoulders curving down into stiles; crest and stiles flat on front, rounded on reverse; vase-shaped splat terminating in molded shoe; trapezoidal seat with serpentine lower front and side seat rails; separate seat frame (missing cane center, with replaced board in its place) rests on top of seat rails and is tenoned into rear of chair; angular cabriole front legs with sharp front corners terminating in Spanish feet; stiles continue down with backwards rake to form squared rear legs; side, medial, and rear turned stretchers.
Label TextThis set of 3 side chairs descended in the Tucker family of Bermuda. Made of Bermuda cedar, the choice furniture wood on the island, the chair reflects European style influences of the early 18th century with its vase shaped splat, angular cabriole legs, and serpentine seat rails combined with the earlier Spanish feet. A number of related examples survive in Bermudea collections suggesting this was a popular form. The chairs originally all had cane seats, reflecting the warm environment of the island.
