Du Val./Geographe du Roy./ A PARIS En l’Isle du palais. au coin de la rue de Harlay/ Avec Privilege du Roy. 1677Label TextThe plate for this map was first engraved in 1616 to accompany Champlain's 1619 "Les Voyages" and shows the important discoveries made during a series of explorations undertaken in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Champlain's voyages resulted in the founding of Quebec, the first successful French colony in North America. Currently, there is only one surviving copy of the map from the 1616 printing. The plate was eventually purchased by Pierre Duval (publisher of this version) from Gabriel Tavernier, the original publisher. Duval added many place names and issued the map at various times between 1653 and 1677.
