Champlain's voyages resulted in the founding of Quebec, the first successful French colony in North America. Currently, there is only one surviving copy of the map from the 1616 printing. The plate was eventually purchased by Pierre Duval (publisher of this version) from Gabriel Tavernier, the original publisher. Duval added many place names and issued the map at various times between 1653 and 1677.
This map is published in William C. Wooldridge, "Mapping Virginia: From the Age of Exploration to the Civil War" (Charlottesville: University of Virginia Press, 2012), #28.
