Label TextThis map was engraved by Pieter van den Keere and appeared in a reduced-size Latin edition of Johannes Cloppenberg's 'Gerardi Mercatoris Atlis sive Cosmograhicae.' It is the fourth derivative of John Smith's 1612 map of Virginia. This map is identified as state 2 because the moiré effect in the sea has been removed (see 2017-45 for state 1).
This map is published in William C. Wooldridge, "Mapping Virginia: From the Age of Exploration to the Civil War" (Charlottesville: University of Virginia Press, 2012), pp. 40-42, #35.
