DescriptionThis is a small almost square quilt probably intended for a child or doll. The front consists of one panel of printed patchwork fabric, consisting of squares, rectangles, and triangles featuring a variety of brown stripes, paisley, and floral patterns. The backing is made up of one panel of striped blue and brown cotton. The quilt has a knife edge. The quilting pattern is in outline, with 5-6 running stitches per inch. It is hand stitched.

While the quilt looks like it is made up of patchwork, with small bits of fabric pieced together, it is actually made up of a single piece of fabric made to look like patchwork. The fabric, consisting of paisley, floral, and striped prints in a variety of brown tones and in a mix of squares, rectangles, and diamonds, demonstrates how popular patchwork quilting was in the mid-nineteenth century.
