DescriptionThis is a small rectangular coverlet woven in a double weave structure with two shades of indigo wool and natural-color cotton. The pattern is a variation of Pine Tree and Snowball. The coverlet consists of two panels, each about 28 3/4 in. wide, stitched together with a butted seam. It is marked in faded red cross stitches in left botton corner block: "I C". The coverlet has a rolled hem at top and fringe, most of which is missing, at bottom and sides.Label TextThis coverlet is woven in a variation of a pine tree and snowball pattern .A double-woven textile, like this one, is actually made of two layers of cloth woven simultaneously on a loom. Double-woven coverlets are heavy and warm, not only because of the two distinct layers but also because of the air pockets formed between them as part of the weaving process.
MarkingsIt is marked in faded red cross stitches in left botton corner block: "I C".
ProvenanceThe coverlet was purchased by the donors around 1975 from John Newcomer Antiques in Keedysville, West Virginia, and Alexandria, Virginia. The dealer believed it to be from the Valley of Virginia.
