DescriptionWine red colored waistcoat made of woolen broadcloth. The skirts and the center fronts faced with a darker red glazed shalloon. The shallon is pieced behind the buttonholes. Beyond the shalloon facing, the rest of the center front and back are lined with a plain-woven bays that has been heavily milled. Wooden buttons down the center front are covered with a thread worked basket woven pattern. The collar is made of silk velvet, mounted on to a broadcloth base. The pockets are seamed onto the body and the bags are made from a herringbone twilled cotton. The wrong side of the cotton pocket faces outward into the pocket.Label TextWaistcoats readily survive from the 18th century, however this example with a falling collar is rare. Until the late 1780s, most waistcoats did not have collars, however several portraits of men wearing hunting attire occasionally show this unusual fashion. To date this is the only known example of this date to survive.
