DescriptionTeapot: Drum-shaped body rising to a slightly canted top in which sits a circular lid topped by an acorn knop in which the central vent hole is pierced; the body with engine-turned decoration allover; a straight spout is opposite an ear-shaped handle; the spout with decoration on the lower half ensuite with the engine-turned body; the handle crisply molded with an acanthus leaf extending from the top juncture to the thumb rest and the lower portion mimicking woven basket decoration. "ASTBURY" impressed on the underside of the base within the inset foot.Label TextJoshua Astbury (1728-1780) of Lane Delph in Staffordshire, England, is the likely maker of this stunning teapot, one of only four red stoneware objects currently known that bear an impressed ASTBURY mark. Several marks are attributed to Astbury, but the rectangular mark on the teapot is the only one that incorporates the potter’s name. The use of a crown lathe created the crisp uniform engine-turned chevron pattern and wavy line motifs that decorate the body, shoulder, and lid of the object.
