DescriptionTankard with tapered cylindrical body with molded rim and base, and fillet 1/3 height above base; WR in leaf spray engraved on front. Scroll handle with bud tip and WR engraved below hinge leaf. Hinged, double domed, molded lid with scroll thumbpiece.
Label TextThis tankard and CWF accessions 1950-790 and 1954-942 are standard examples from the second quarter of the eighteenth century. Their scrolled handles are fitted with chair-back thumb pieces and ball terminals. They are the work of one of the principal London makers of those years, William Eddon or Eden. A specialist in hollowware, he produced many fine tankards and other drinking vessels over a long and productive career. He was also a major maker of export wares for the American market.
InscribedOwner's initials "W R" engraved on face of handle. Later owner's cipher "WR" with foliate embellishment engraved on face of body opposite handle.
MarkingsTouch mark an hourglass with "W" to the left and "E" to the right within an outlined and beaded circle on interior center-bottom of base (Cotterell 1503).
Pseudo hallmarks (1) leopard's head within a conforming reserve, (2) buckle within a shaped rectangle, (3) lion passant within a shaped rectangle, and (4) indistinct on face of body to left of handle (Cotterell 1503). Verification mark "WR" with crown above on face of body below pseudo hallmarks.
