DescriptionTankard with round-topped double-domed cover with projecting flange with crenate lip opposite handle and short bezel on underside fitting within rim of body; cover hinged to handle with ram's horn thumbpiece extending vertically from upper hinge plate soldered to cover and ribbed triangular drop depending on face of handle from lower hinge plate; tapered straight-sided cylindrical body with multiple molding at rim and base; conventional S-scroll tankard handle of D-shaped section attached at rim and to lower section of bodyLabel TextThe taller, more slender tankard with a domed cover first appears in the 1680s, but it did not largely displace the flat-lidded tankard of squatter proportions until the first years of the next century. Early examples often retain the projecting cover flange with pronounced denticulations opposite the handle, as well as thumbpiece forms and boot-heel terminals, commonly seen on flat-lidded examples. Most early examples are of modest size.
