DescriptionArmchair: high, arched back composed of 4 rectangular posts, one at each corner, originally terminating in ball finials (one remains); arched supports connect rear posts and front posts at top; rectangular braces on sides and back below; areas between braces and posts on sides and back filled with caning; slightly S-shaped arms terminate in crude, scroll grips; trapezoidal seat with molded front seat rail; seat and areas below arms are caned; all four legs formed by straight, rectangular downward extensions of legs and are braced at base by rectanuglar stretchers at floor level; carved, flat front stretcher with geometric and floral designs; area between seat rail and front stretcher and areas between seat rails and floor at sides and rear are caned; front stiles, front arch, sides of arms, and sides and front of front seat rail carved with diamond motif.
Label TextThe taste for caned furniture in the late 17th century is exemplified by this extraordinary chair, wherein virtually every open space has been filled with caning. Possibly used as a garden or "Bath" chair, survivals of this exceedingly fragile form are, indeed, rare.
