DescriptionLadderback armchair, with cylindrical rear stiles at sharp angle, terminating in high, turned finials; back composed of four, arched slats mortised between rear stiles; slightly serpentine, flat arms terminating in plain, flat, scroll grips; arms supported by vase and ring turned posts, being the upper half of the plain, cylindrical front legs; square, splint seat (not original); legs braced by plain, cylindrical stretchers, three at front, two on each side, one at rear; rear of chair braced by a framework consisting of cylindrical rear posts (topped by flat, mushroom finials; short stretchers connect posts to back posts) of chair at three points, above bottom splat, below seat, and near base; pair of cylindrical stretchers brace two rear posts at top and bottom; painted black over what appears to be original red.Woods: The chair is constructed entirely of maple with the exception of the three front stretchers, which are of white oak.
