DescriptionPlate without a foot ring. Bluish tin glaze decorated in blue with the initials GR surmounted by a crown surrounded by stylized leafage. Concentric banding and a border of intertwined scallops.Label TextThis plate could have been made to commemorate either George I or George II. The rim decoration is similar to that found on both GR and AR Act of Union plates (see CWF accession 1956-317) and on plates with Queen Anne's portrait. Several plates with intertwined-scallop borders have been excavated at Limekiln Lane in Bristol and at the Prentis House-Russell House (17DA.0689), the Coke-Garrett House (27AB.0277), and Wetherburn's Tavern (9NA.1539) in Williamsburg. The inner ring of stylized leafage is not unlike the rim of a barber's bowl dated 1763. A cruder dish with the initials GR is dated 1740, illustrating that a monarch was not always identified numerically (as the second or third, and so on). The London attribution is based on the shape of the plate.
