DescriptionCandlestick. Two of four white slipped sockets (2 off 6/81) around central slip trailed "1668" socket (have broken piece). Four flattened handles with "raspberry prunt" like stamped patterns on spine and slip dotting on edges. Central stem slip trailed in foliate pattern. Four handles similar to above with ovoid stamped slip ornament on tops and bottoms and single high relief slip stamped (or applied) "raspberry prunt". Central stem trailed with spirals and foliate patterns. Level 4- Four handles similar in shape and ornament to Level 2. Stem trailed with spirals and foliate patterns and verticle lines. Level 5--Same as Level 5 #1. Base: Same as base with candlstick #1, with 4 instead of 3 prunts per group.
Label TextThis rare pair of thrown and hand-formed candlesticks from Wrotham bears both trailed slip and stamped relief decoration and is dated 1668. They are attributed to potter George Richardson because of other similar examples initialed "GR" (in the collections of the British Museum, the Fitzwilliam Museum, and the Manchester City Art Gallery). Richardson's initials appear on at least twenty pieces dated between 1642 and 1677.
