DescriptionBulbous-bodied mug with slightly flared cylindrical neck, loop handle with scroll base terminal, and small foot ring. White tin glaze decorated in blue with half-length portraits of William and Mary in oval cartouches inscribed, respectively, "WR" and "QM" on the neck, the date 1694.Label TextThis is the only recorded example of a dated William and Mary mug in delft. It was made in 1694, the year of Queen Mary's death. The ornament is unusual in that the king and queen are on opposite sides of the mug, rather than side by side as seen in objects such as a delft caudle cup in the CWF collection (accession 1956-530). The London attribution for the present mug is based on the shape, the color of the glaze, and the decoration.
Inscribed"WR" and "QM." On the neck, the date 1694.
