DescriptionThe lower margin reads: "The State Watchman discover'd by the Genius of Britain/ studying plans for the Reduction of America./ Pub.d by I. Jones, 10 Dec. 1781."Thomas Rowlandson is believed to have drawn this simple satire in which George III sleeps on the sofa, a pose often used to emphasize his apparent lack of concern about British policies. Britannia, holding her liberty cap, complains, "Am I thus Protected?" A small man peers over the back of the sofa saying "Hollo Neighbour! what are you asleep?"
Published shortly after the British surrender at Yorktown, it expressed England's disappointment at the outcome of the war and America’s surprise at the king's indifference.
At the bottom: "The State Watchman discovered by the Genius of Britain studying plans for the Reduction of America."
