DescriptionSoft-paste porcelain urn on cylindrical pedestal. The ground color of the urn is red-violet and the neck, shoulder, and body have been highlighted with gilding. The urn has molded decoration in relief of two women's heads on either side of the vessel. There are garlands of blue flowers with gilt leaves. The cylindrical pedestal also has a red-violet ground color. It is highlighted with bands of gilding and gilt floral sprays. The stopper and attached stand are of ormolu.Label TextThe claret ground on this urn is another of the ground colors used at Chelsea during the gold anchor period. The contemporary terms for it were "crimson" or "rose," both referred to in the Chelsea 1761 sale catalog. The piece may have been made early in the Chelsea-Derby period, although the molding and painting of the mask handles suggest a gold anchor attribution.
