DescriptionOctagonal, soft-paste porcelain teacup with the "Lady & Pavilion" pattern, resembling the Kakiemon prototype. The exterior is decorated with a woman in turquoise and red robes and a pavilion with curtains and tassels painted with red, yellow, blue and turquoise. There is a blue, flying bird and a bird cage. At the bottom of the interior of the cup is a single red flower.Label TextAn oriental woman seated outside a garden structure is today generally referred to as the lady-and-pavilion pattern. It is probably an earlier rendition of the "lady pattern" referred to in the Chelsea 1755 catalog and the "old japan lady pattern" of the 1756 catalog, Kakiemon designs not known in Meissen. The original Japanese examples often depict the lady seated within rather than beside the pavilion or with a man standing beside her. The design was sometimes painted in Holland on pieces of previously undecorated oriental porcelain. It also appears on porcelain made at Bow, where in 1756 a "Japan octogon cup and saucer lady pattern" were borrowed, presumably for copying.
