DescriptionStanding figure of a man representing "Winter" wears a yellow hat with brown fur on the brim, a white greatcoat with large collar and cuffs, brown hair, gray beard, purple coat, and black and yellow shoes in overglazed enamels. He holds a basket of coals with the loop handle with right hand and by the bottom with his left. He stands on a round flat base with applied floral decoration.

Label TextA set of "four small figures of the seasons" appears more than once in the 1755 Chelsea catalog, while several other lots include only one or two figures of the seasons sometimes listed by name. But none of the "winters" seems to be this model, for they are referred to either as "large" or as part of a candlestick. Early versions of the model may be from the "sett of Sesons" decorated by William Duesbury and listed in his account book. The same figure also appears in Longton Hall porcelain and perhaps in Bow.
