DescriptionFigure of a gray haired and bearded man standing nude except for overglaze green and red-and-purple-foliated lined drapery falling from his right shoulder. He leans to the left from his waist, holding a staff with both hands to the front of his right side. The round scroll base is made of a large shell with small applied shells and flowers.Gold anchor period.
Label TextLike Chelsea's Ranelagh masqueraders, the small figure of a bearded river god is of the early gold anchor period. It might in fact be considered a transitional piece, for it does not fall clearly into either the red or gold anchor periods--the gold anchor mark is in the red anchor style. The figure is unusual because shells and seaweed appear without the traditional dolphin.
