DescriptionFigure of an eagle on almost flat shaped base, wings displayed, looking over right wing at figure of young man (Ganymede) who is seated on his back. He looks down at the eagle, his left hand on the eagle’s neck, his right hand on his bent knee, his right foot stretched in front of him; he wears buskins and a cuirass over a tunic and a cloak falls from his back. Two branches with applied leaves project from the back of the base supporting the eagle's left wing and Ganymede's head and right shoulder.Label TextLike many of the St. James Factory examples, the "Ganymede and the Eagle" has a dramatic diagonal motion in the opposite direction from the figure group logically pair with it, "Europa and the Bull." Of the five or six examples of Ganymede recorded in 1960, three were still paired with Europas. One example of Ganymede and two of Europa are candlesticks with sockets and flanges projecting from the tree supports at the back.
