DescriptionA figure tavern group of four men and one woman seated around a circular table with a central spiral shaft. On the table are a tall candlestick, a bowl with ladle, three goblets, and a small bowl containing tobacco. The figures, with eyes picked out in dark brown, are seated in four chairs with high backs with a central splat. One man, his hair or wig is tied at the back of his head, wears a coat of red clay; in his right hand is a goblet and on his lap a woman, his left hand resting on her shoulder. The woman also holds a goblet in her right hand and wears a bodice with elbow length sleeves. A skirt with stamped decoration, and an apron. In the chair to the left sits a man pouring from a wine bottle with his left hand. He wears a long jacket with applied buttons. At his right side sits a small black and white dog. Across the table from the couple sits a man, his hair tied in back of his head, holding a pipe in his right hand and wearing a long jacket with applied buttons, opening in front revealing a collar and waistcoat of red clay. To the couple's right sits a man, his hair falling around his neck, holding in his left hand a pipe and his right hand reaching into the tobacco bowl. He wears a jacket open in the front and knee pants. The group rests on a flat, circular platform with scalloped edges which in turn is supported by 4 spool-shaped feet. The figure group is mostly of white clay with mottled manganese on the base and on the backs of the chairs. All are covered with a lead glaze.MarkingsNone
