DescriptionThis handkerchief consists of Ellicott's map of Washington, D. C., printed in red copperplate on white tabby cotton. Center of snuff handkerchief has plan of Washington, flanked by the "Potomak" River and the Eastern Branch, with "George Town" in the upper left. Corners of handkerchief have one shipping scene and scenes representing America-- Liberty, male figure wearing headdress, etc. Printed paragraphs of explanation surround central map.
MarkingsThree blue threads in selvages, indicating English manufacture on all cotton material, for export trade (required by law from 1774- 1811).
