DescriptionPattern 1777 Land service musket of standard form, with walnut stock, round barrel, rounded brass mounts and straight-bottomed Pattern 1777 double-bridled lock.
Label TextFurther cost-saving improvements appeared in the succeeding version of the Short Land Pattern musket in 1777. A redesigned lock included a simplified engraving scheme, a new upper cock assembly with a hole in the top jaw screw, and two screws showing through the tail of the lockplate. Also, the second pipe from the muzzle was now slightly flared to help in returning the rammer.
MarkingsLock engraved with "Crown GR" ahead of cock with "TOWER" behind, and a "Crowned Broad Arrow" is struck under the pan. Barrel is engraved "P / 55" and is struck with the usual Ordnance View & Proof marks, in addition to the maker's mark "IW" under a star(for John Whately). A "Crown 4" is struck above the vent, and the wristplate is engraved "P / 55."
