DescriptionThis is an almost-square wholecloth quilt of large-scale block-printed cotton in a design of gnarled undulating branches bearing various leaves and flowers consisting of roses, tulips, and poppies printed in madder colors with penciled blue on a white cotton ground. The bed cover is quilted through thick cotton batting with linen thread running stitches worked at five to six per inch and forming a central circular medallion in a field of a double-line lattice grid. Quarter-round spandrels contain pointed fans on the inside corners of the wide outer border. The border consists of undulating double lines enclosing reciprocally arranged anthemion motifs. The edges are finished by having the face fabric and backing folded inside and stitched with running stitches close to the edge. The backing is white cotton panels measuring 30 1/2", 32", and 35" wide. The face fabric is about 30 1/2" wide. (All measurements exclude seam allowances.)
