DescriptionLower margin reads: "Patel pinx.t./ Fran..s Vivares sculp.t/ Engraved from an Original Picture of Patel, in the Collection of W..m Fawkner Esq.r/ No. 23/ Published by Fran.s Vivares April 1762."Label TextPrints after the work of Old Master paintings were popular in the eighteenth century and were often copied from paintings owned by English art dealers or collectors or gentleman who had imported them from abroad. Lending a painting to an engraver or publisher for the purpose of reproduction added to the value of the work itself and raised could raise the reputation of the owner as a person of wealth, refinement, and taste. This painting engraved and published by Francis Vivares after the work of French painter Pierre-Antoine Patel the Younger, was owned in the collection of banker and collector William Fawkener (d. 1769). Patel, both father and son, were famous for landscapes. Senior in particular is cited as an able imitator of Claude Lorrain. Vivares is noted for his fine execution of classical landscapes.
To the left is a large temple in ruins. Trees and plants grow up within it. However one can discern some of the relief sculpture at the base. A tomb is shown to the extreme left of the ruin. It is graced with relief sculpture and a sculpted figure on the top. In the foreground cattle graze. Shepherds are scattered around the print. A young woman carrying a basket on her head is seen in the center. A child plays with a dog on the steps of the ruin.
