DescriptionLower margin reads: "Patel pinx,,t/ F. Vivares sculp,/ Engraved from an Original Picture of Patel, in the Collection of Charles Chauncy M.D. / Published by F. Vivares 15..th November 1757/ N.o 6"Label TextPrints after the work of Old Master paintings were popular in the eighteenth century and were often copied from paintings owned by English art dealers or collectors or gentleman who had imported them from abroad. Lending a painting to an engraver or publisher for the purpose of reproduction added to the value of the work itself and raised could raise the reputation of the owner as a person of wealth, refinement, and taste. This painting engraved and published by Francis Vivares after the work of French painter Pierre-Antoine Patel the Younger, was owned in the collection of gentleman physician and collector Charles Chauncy MD who was a great collector of Antiquarian works, particularly paintings, prints, coins, and books. Patel, both father and son, were famous for landscapes, his father in particular is cited as an able imitator of Claude Lorrain. Vivares is noted for his fine execution of classical landscapes.
Classical landscape print: to the left of the print a large temple is shown in ruins. Trees grown up from within, and vines cover some of the wall. However, one can still discern the classical sculpture done in relief on some of the stones. The temple is partially surrounded by water, in which one young man has thrown in a line for fishing. Two other young cattle herders are seen in the foreground. To the rear on another body of water some boats are seen sailing about. The landscape is filled with trees, bushes, a tiny village to the rear and then some mountains.
