DescriptionThis is a woven rectangular bed rug with shaggy knots forming a geometric pattern of octagonal diamonds and squares in blue, black, and rust-red. The textile is formed from two selvage-width panels joined by a center seam. Rolled hems finish the top and bottom, and selvages finish the sides. Technical information: The ground is a 2:2 twill of white linen and black plied together, creating a speckled effect. Each knot of the pile is a turkey knot composed of three strands of two-ply wool. Although the pattern is not consistent, the knots are tied around the warp threads, approximately at every 7th and 8th threads. Four rows of weft separate each row of knots.
Label TextBed rugs were heavy bedcovers intended for warmth. They were made in several different techniques, including loom-woven knots and embroidered stitches covering the entire surface, like this one .
ProvenanceVendor stated that the bed rug was purchased in Wythe County, Virginia.
