DescriptionSide chair: rectangular back composed of pair of vertical members, square in section and a pair of horizontal members, square in section; area between vertical and horizontal members upholstered and covered with turkey-work; square seat, upholstered and covered with turkey work all over seat rails; blocked and baluster turned front legs; blocked rear legs; legs braced by four rectangular stretchers near floor. UPHOLSTERY: Ghiordes knotted technique; about 35 knots per sq. inch; linen warps and wefts (one shot of weft after each row of knots. Colors: Ground: field - black (almost 90% deteriorated) trim - red and white; Pattern: light yellow-green, dark yellowish-green, light blue-green, dark blue-green, yellow, gold, pink, rose, red, and white. The design is one of angular flowers, tulips, roses, carnation, with stiff stems and angular leaves. Seat and back are trimmed with a knotted edging tacked on with 3/8" square head metal (brass?) tacks. Upholstery old, but probably not original to chair.ProvenanceEx. Coll. Francis P.
