DescriptionPlate with incised foot ring. White tin glaze decorated in black oriental style with flowers in different types of vases. On the rim, three evenly spaced smaller vases, each holding a curved, flowering branch. On the reverse, a stylized leaf in blue on the base and three evenly spaced squiggles in blue on the rim.
Label TextBlack decoration is extremely rare on English delft. The few known examples are generally associated with Liverpool in the mid-eighteenth century. In each case, the thick shiny black decoration appears to sit on the surface of the piece. The Colonial Williamsburg collection includes a second example of this ware: a small punch bowl (accession 1975-93) inscribed "Success to Trade." An unpublished circular dish in the collection of the H. F. du Pont Winterthur Museum (accession 64.949) may be from the same service as this plate. A bottle at the Bristol Museum is decorated in a chinoiserie style and also relates to this piece.
