DescriptionSquare tile. White tin glaze decorated in blue with a quadrant design (four of which are required to form a complete unit) of a Tudor rose encircled by strapwork. Glaze puddled, leaving several large areas exposed near central part of the design.Paving tile is one of about 500 archaeological shards of tin-glazed earthenware, excavated from Hayes Warf properties in the vicinity of Tooley Street, Bermondsey, London. (See object file for individual numbers.)
Label TextThis waster was found near the Pickleherring pottery site. Eight other fragments of tiles in this collection with the same pattern and color were found at the same location, but none is necessarily a waster. Four shards of tiles in this collection, decorated in the same pattern but in polychrome, are also from the same site. A polychrome example with this design was found during the rebuilding of the Royal Exchange in London in 1848. It is speculated that the tile must have been laid before the great fire in 1666.
