DescriptionThis is a double-woven, center-seamed all-wool coverlet of dark and light blue coloration, with self-fringe at bottom. The interior design consists of four different types of flower spray repeats. The side borders consist of spread eagles with hearts on their chests, the birds appearing under stars and alternating, first, with, two birds in a tree and, second, a vase of flowers, all over a small floral band. Bottom and top borders consist of a rooster standing on an ovoid ("football") shape, candlestick-like devices flanking two vases (?) and a spread eagle under stars. Woven into all four corner blocks is "MARCH 6/1835."Label TextAlthough most coverlets were woven in a combination of wool and cotton, this example is all wool in light and dark blue. Attributed to Bergen County, New Jersey, because of its color scheme and double-weave structure, the coverlet includes motifs such as the "rooster on a football" and eagles seen on other New Jersey coverlets.
MarkingsWoven into all four corner blocks is "MARCH 6/1835."
