DescriptionOval basket with flaring sides. The sides pierced to resemble a series of interlocking circles. Two proud handles of rope-twist form at opposite sides. The edge of the basket with an applied intertwined garland of leafy grapes and leafy roses. The garland descends in a gentle swag from the handles and principally on the outside of the basket, but with some leaves wrapping around the piercings. The various outside junctures of the basket with modelled and applied flowers. These flowers painted in underglaze blue that has run considerably. The glaze mottled in both color and disposition from the dry to the glossy and from gray to yellow to blue-green. The glaze with numerous small flecks. Painted in blue on the underside: "PHILADELFIA / the 23 April 1773 / 4.7"Inscribed"PHILADELFIA / the 23 April 1773 / 4.7" in blue to underside.
