DescriptionMan's domed and peaked cap of linen-cotton twill embroidered in chain stitches (probably tambour work) in polychrome crewel wools. The crown of the cap is constructed in two pieces and shaped into four sections by the addition of darts, with the seams and darts defined by red herringbone stitches. On each quarter is a sprig of flowers, red-and-brown centered with blue, alternating with blue centered with red. The turned-up cuff is embroidered with a scrolling floral vine and edged with pink silk bobbin lace. Pompon on top is of pink lace and crewel wools. Linen lining. Ink drawing for the embroidery design is still visible where some of the embroidery has worn away.ProvenanceEx Coll: Tomlinson, D.C. Cohen.
