DescriptionThis is a rectangular needlework sampler worked in shades of orange, green, red, pink, yellow, beige, and brown wool threads on a natural-color linen ground. The top third of the sampler consists of one upper case alphabet, one lower case alphabet, decorative bands, the numerals 1-16, heart motif, and the signature line. The first two bands consist of capital letters. The third band has a capital "Z," followed by lower-case letters "A" through "P." The next line has lower-case letters "Q" through "Z," then numerals 1 through 3. The next line has numerals 4 through 16, with 5 and 6 each listed twice. The next line has an inscription which reads, "Ann Phillips [G]reen," followed by a heart. The next line reads, "Aged 7 Years 1827." Below this is a large flowering tree in the center with a heart above it, flanked by red birds at top and base, baskets of flowers, orange birds, and large flowers with several pink blossoms. The lower third of the sampler consists of a large two-story house with two chimneys and five windows sitting on a lawn with flanking baskets of flowers. Three sets of flanking birds fly around the house and a multi-colored eight pointed star is centered above the house. Potted flowers sit on top of each chimney.

Label TextAnn Phillips Green made this sampler in 1827 at seven years old, as she so proudly stitched on her work. The sampler features primarily red and green threads, which may indicate that Ann made it in Scotland. The house at the bottom of the sampler may represent her home, the place in which she learned how to stitch, or simply a house design that was popular in needlework at the time.
