ProvenanceHand written note in blue ink accompanying stockings: "This pair stockings were made by Phobe Border for her husband Captain George Border who died in 1809. She spun the yarn for them." According to vendor, these were purchased in Connecticut in the 1920s or 1930s and loaned to the Massachusetts Historical Society at one time.
