DescriptionTransfer printed plate with a border containing four eagles and four medallions. In two of the medallions are quotations from the Constitution, in the third, a pair of scales, and in the fourth, at the top of the border, Justice pardoning a slave with the words, "Lovejoy, the first Martyr to American Liberty, at Alton, Nov. 7, 1837." In the center of the plate the first amendment to the Constitution is printed. All this is done in underglaze blue transfer printing on a whiteware body. The plate has a slightly scalloped edge.This pattern is often called the Constitution First Amendment pattern or the Lovejoy pattern.
