DescriptionThis is a small white cover or crib quilt embroidered and quilted in a design of scrolling flowers, lacey effects, abstract fruit, and leaves. At the center, a 22-inch symmetrical circular medallion is surrounded by a dense field of flowers and scrolls and bordered on all four sides by additional leafy motifs. The textile is worked in cord quilting stitched with backstitches, as well as pulled and drawn work, French knots, and eyelets. The textile is made of cotton on front and back, cord quilted with cotton stuffing, and embroidered with linen thread. The front edges are folded to the back and finished with a narrow tabby tape.Label TextThis exquisite example of white needlework and quilting may have been used as part of an elaborate layette ensemble. Such pieces were often made in Marseilles, France, for export. English embroiderers also copied the popular style of embroidery.
