DescriptionThis is a rectangular counterpane of white cotton worked in heavy white cotton embroidery thread. The counterpane centers on a flower, which is encapsulated by a circle. Four pairs of vines emanate from the circle. A flower cornucopia fills each of four inner corners. A wide border consists of a scalloped, undulating vine laden with various flowers and leaves. There is a narrow hem on all four edges. The counterpane is made up of four panels, seamed with backstitches. Three of the panels measure at 24 3/4" in width and the fourth at 9 3/4".

Stitches: buttonhole, chain, drawn work, eyelets, feather, French knots, satin, and stem
Label TextThis bed coverlet is embroidered in heavy white cotton threads in a variety of decorative stitches. The technique is sometimes referred to today as "candlewick" because the diameter of the cotton threads is similar to that of a candlewick.
ProvenanceMrs. Joyce McDowell donated this counterpane to Colonial Williamsburg in 1984.
