DescriptionThis is an oval dual gold brooch containing a daguerreotype under glass of Martha Ann Waring Wright. It is die stamped and the gold frame is engraved.
Label TextBorn in 1812, Martha Ann Waring Wright was one of two children of William Lowry Waring and Elizabeth Chilton Hudnell. When Martha's mother died in 1814, her father married Mary Banks and the couple had at least five more children. Martha married Robert Wright of Poplar Grove on December 11, 1828. The sampler and brooch descended in Martha Waring's family until they were given to Colonial Williamsburg in 1986.

ProvenanceMartha Ann Waring Wright, born in 1812, was one of 2 children of William Lowry Waring and Elizabeth Chilton Hudnell. In 1814, her mother died and her father married Mary Banks and had 5 more children. Martha married Robert Wright of "Popular Grove" on Dec. 11, 1828. They had 4 children. She died Sept. 20th, 1881. The sampler, along with a brooch (G1986-127) with a daguerreotype image of Martha, descended in Martha Waring's family of Essex County, Virginia. The donor, Mrs. David, is the grandchild of Martha's grandchild, Elizabeth Lowry Smith, who was raised by Martha when her mother, Elizabeth Lowry Wright Smith died. Genealogy supplied by donor.
