DescriptionSide chair. Offset block and turned stiles topped with finials and mortised to receive heavily scroll-carved crest and splat rails; crest and splat rails mortised to receive two heavily scroll-carved vertical splats which flank a vertical, caned central section; turned and scroll-carved front legs tenoned into straight front and side seat rails at front corners; rear and side seat rails tenoned into rear stiles; block and turned H-plan and rear stretchers tenoned into legs; scroll-carved front stretcher tenoned into front legs; seat caned; entire chair originally stained black or dark brown.ProvenanceDescended through Vose or Smith family of eastern Massachusetts. The Vose family has been in eastern Massachusetts since the middle of the 17th century.
