DescriptionWoman's stays of white cotton twill, styled with partial lacing running eight inches down center front and full lacing down center back. Tabs over hips and shoulder straps extending from front with eyelets for tying to back. Eyelets are finished in white silk thread. Front has four images of vine and leaves running vertically within the channels. Outlined images embroidered in running stitch in white thread. Boned with cane. Stays have remnants of thread bridges on back side at the bustline and at center front point, possibly to hold a busk. Construction History:
1. 1775-1800: Initially Constructed; No additions are alterations after the initial construction date noted. The silk ribbon laced through one shoulder strap and the additional laces throughout the stays are likely not original.
ProvenanceThought to have been worn by Anne Van Cortlandt Van Rensselaer (1766-1855), daughter of Pierre and Joanna Van Cortlandt, Croton, NY, married Philip Van Rensselaer in 1787, future mayor of Albany.
