DescriptionThis rectangular blue and white double cloth coverlet has a central design of 12 large floral medallions alternating with 6 smaller rosettes. The borders on all four sides have birds facing each other beneath drooping willow trees alternating with vases of flowers. The four corner blocks each have a spread eagle and the inscription, "DELHI. 1841.” The coverlet is made from two panels seamed vertically along the center. The sides are selvedges and the ends are hemmed.
Label TextThe earliest figured and fancy coverlets were woven in New York State. A majority of New York weavers came from the British Isles where their preference for using double weave was established. Patriotic, historic, or Masonic themes are often seen on New York coverlets, reflecting the sentiments of both weaver and client. New York coverlets often lack corner blocks and borders and were woven in a blue and white color scheme. Delhi, located in south-central New York State, was the home of several weavers who used the town’s name as part of their corner block logo.
