DescriptionHangar press in two sections: top in cupboard form; base consists of storage area covered by slanting lid, below which are drawers. A) Upper section: overhanging molded cornice; two fielded panel doors, each with two small rectangular panels at top over a horizontal panel over two vertical panels; doors hinged on outer sides each with two original brass H-hinges mounted on rectangular blocks pegged and glued to surface of stiles; cupboard interior with row of wooden pegs at back of top; one small drawer below outer corner of each panneled door; B) Base: molding applied to top edges; slant-front with four hinges at top, in same manner as doors to upper section; below this a horizontal row of three drawers; "S PARKER" brass originally on drawer at left and part of a brass in drawer at right; Adamesque brass (1947-7, c) on middle drawer when acquired by Colonial Williamsburg; horizontal row of two deep drawers at base of back with evidence of Adamesque type of brass (like 1947-7,c). molding at base; straight bracket feet.Woods: Primary: walnut; Secondary: walnut and southern pine
MarkingsNone found on press; stamped on underside of brass backplate original to the press and with a phoenix motif is "S PARKER" (probably Samuel Parker).
ProvenanceAccording to source; "J.S. Kaiser found it outside Bridgewater, Viriginia, near the West Virginia line."
