DescriptionDish, circular; raised triple-reeded moulding at edge of inclined rim of moderate width; concave hammered booge to flat base. "A L" in block letters stamped on face of rim opposite pseudo-hallmarks. (Unidentified).Label TextIt is during this period of the multiple reed that one occasionally encounters plates and dishes with their entire surfaces hammered in a regular pattern of concentric circles, not just the customary hammering of the booge or the short, curved sides of the well. This not only immeasurably enhanced their decorative effect and appeal, but it also compressed and strengthened the metal and lent added strength to these sometimes very broad, flat forms.
InscribedOwner's initials "AL" stamped on face of rim opposite pseudo hallmarks.
MarkingsTouch mark a pelican in its piety with "89" above framed by "RICHARD" above and "WHITE" below within separate curved reserves and a plumed cartouche to either side on underside of rim (London Touch Plate II, 448; Cotterell 5097). Secondary mark a rose with crown above with "R" to the left and "W" to the right within a conforming reserve on underside of rim (Cotterell 5097). Pseudo hallmarks (1) black letter R, (2) black letter W, (3) pelican in its piety, and (4) leopard's head crowned, each within a separate shaped shield on face of rim (Cotterell 5097).
