The tumbler is undecorated except for a 3 1/2" tall shield on the obverse just beneath the rim of the glass. A cut outline encloses the wheel-engraved frosted ground of the shield, with a script initial "S" cut into the center.

ProvenanceCame from the Stratton and Upshur families, who lived at "Elkington" on Eastern Shore Virginia. According to family tradition this glass and matching decanter 1951-157, A & B, were owned by Anne Gertrude (Stratton) Parker (1795-1889). The period of these pieces together with their initials "S" make it very likely that they were owned first by her mother, Lucy (Diggs) Stratton (1772-1848). The items may have descended through Mrs. Anne Parker to her daughter, Mrs. Sarah (Parker) Upshur, and to Judge Henry L. Upshur, father of Mrs. K. A. Jarvis.
